Wineries and luncheoning

Happy National Women’s Day. It’s a public holiday today, so that would explain the quiet roads (despite the taxi bus strike) and full restaurants.

The plan for the day was to drive through one of the wine regions. Tick, we got it right, although the first two wineries weren’t open, but the third (Maastricht Wines) and fourth (Nitída Wine Farm) were. We love South African wines, they do an excellent lightly wooded Sauvignon Blanc. At Nitída we sat outside in the sunshine sampling some wines with gorgeous views and better ones around the corner of some stunning mountains.

Unfortunately, we forgot to take any photos until after we had left! Doh! Their restaurant was full, but our lovely lady at the cellar door rang them and got them to squeeze us in.

As we’d forgotten to take any photos at the last winery of the lovely mountains, The Albatross was going to make up for it whilst we were driving, however, we were facing the wrong way.

Next stop was to see some dinosaur fossils. However, as we took over an hour for lunch, we didn’t get to the fossil park until 10 to 3pm. Problem was they closed at 3pm and all the tours were over. So we wandered through their “museum” which was nice, but disappointing as there were no dinosaurs.

Oh well, let’s go find our apartment. Our GPS took us a couple of less than perfect ways, the first ending up facing a locked gate and the second to send us down a residential street full of speed bumps. We thought we were going to get hit by a third one when we came to these huge gates/arches with boom gates. But it was the right way and the security lady did actually know who we were and let us through.

Our apartment is really nice with views out over the ocean. I spent the rest of the afternoon and all evening relaxing with the only sound being the crashing waves crashing and watching the sunset.
