Through the mountains on to the plateau

The Albatross

Thursday 10 August 2023

A lovely sleep and I think I’m on the right time zone. A quick breaky of eggs and bacon while watching the surfers and we were off. Today was just a driving day, however, it is one of the days I’ve most been looking forward to. From the coast, we headed east up through the pass between the Koue Bokkeveld and Matroosberg Mountains, then up onto the high plateau to Sutherland. So, it was a day of amazing changing dramatic scenery, with amazing rock out crops that would have a stratigrapher soiling themselves and boring your tits off.

Sutherland is a tiny, beautiful, somewhat desolate place and home to South Africa’s Astronomy community due to its high altitude and remoteness. Our massive 1930’s stone house that we are staying in must have been majestic in its day for such a small town. It’s still rather gorgeous.

It's still quite early in the evening but the skies are already spectacular, we will go lie in our back yard again later.
