Road trip

We napped good and I think we are now both over our jet lag.

Today was a transit day, a driving day of over 500km. The scenery was awesome. Our first stop was to the South African Astronomical Observatory just out of Sutherland, to have a look as they were booked out for the tours months in advance. We did do some stargazing last night, it consisted of walking out the back door and lying on the ground. We saw three satellites, many bats and a plane.

Our destination was Graff-Reinet. We took a couple of really well graded dirt road that we could zip down at 90-100km/hr and there was next to no traffic on it. Our only one ‘blip’ on the dirt was when The Albatross miss judged/timed a dip in the road and there wasn’t enough time to brake hard enough. However our mighty Proton X70 just slammed into the dip and then did this really big bouncy thingy which sent us and our luggage momentarily airborne, and then continued on, without any issue. Go the Mighty Proton!!!

Along the way we actually saw quite a bit on wildlife. Lots of birds of prey and finches, baboon, monkeys, meercats, some type of antelope thing with a white butt and mongooses.

Now we have checked into our really nice two bedroom house (called Cats Whiskers) in Graff-Reinet. It was still quite warm so a g&t and some wine on the back patio helped us to chill and wind down. Also, with loadshedding planned for 4-5.30pm we didn’t really have any choice but dinner had been prepped so no problem.

More adventures await us tomorrow.
